As far as I can tell, tomato paste is tomato sauce, and tomate sauce is tomato paste . Is there any difference between the two ? Why would two grocery items that are so much alike be available ? Why don't supermarkets stick to one or the other ?

"Tomato paste, or tomato concentrate, consists of tomatoes that have been cooked for several hours, strained and reduced to a thick, rich concentrate.
Tomato puree consists of tomatoes that have been cooked briefly and strained, resulting in a thick liquid.
Tomato sauce is a somewhat thinner tomato puree, and may include seasonings and other flavorings so that it is ready to be used in other dishes or as a base for other sauces. "

Get Some Tomato Sauce. You Can Also Use Tomato Soup As A Substitute. Paste Is A lot Thicker Than Sauce.

Tomato paste is the concentrate. You can substitute 1 6-oz can tomato paste plus 1 cup water for 1 15 oz can tomato sauce. The sauce may also have added spices.
Sometimes you want the concentrated tomato paste to add body or intense flavor.

Tomato paste is actually one of the ingredients in tomato sauce. They are not the same thing. Sauce is seasoned and ready to use. Paste is a conscentrate and usually the ingredient in another dish.

The water content of paste is lower than the water content of sauce. The paste is basically concentrated tomato sauce.

Paste is much thicker and concentrated than tomato sauce.............do not use them interchangeably in recipes or you will not like the results especially do not use tomato sauce where it calls for tomato paste.
