I would like to do the texture with the brush swirls in it. On the Lowe's website it keeps showing it done with just Venetian Plaster..but it's really expensive. Can I just use a regular joint compound, or is venetian plaster the only option?

I have done a plaster effect with regular joint compound and it worked just fine. I didn't do a brush technique, though. I applied it with a paint scrapper to build various layers and then let it dry. I sanded off areas here and there and then dry brushed it with three different shades of paint to give it an old wall look. You might try experimenting with a small section of your wall with the compound (you can buy it in small tubs) and see if it works. It's definitely cheaper than venetian plaster. Hope it works!

I think joint compound will work just fine. The light compounds will also work and sand well. Consistency of pa tern makes the job look uniform. Yes you can do it with joint compound.

Something you might want to try is paint the wall whatever color you want, then after it's dry, crumple up tissue paper, put another coat of paint on,contrasting or similar color, pat the paint into the tissue paper, you'll have a veined/textured effect. It looks good, very unique.Practice on a scrap piece of paneling or something....
