Check out the store's exchange policy. Most stores would accept exchanges since this is Christmas season and requests for exchanges are expected. However, you need to do that as soon as possible. Bring along the receipt to confirm that the tie was purchased at the store.

Do what you want, regarding exchanging it for something for yourself. Since the tie was for him, why not get the money back and let him buy something with it that HE wants?
