It depends on what you are training for, but, I have found, in my own experience, that females tend to be easier to train then males. They are not as dominant, they want to please more and they can keep their minds in the game longer. There is scientific proof that proves they make better detection dogs because of the reasons mentioned above. Males are harder in temperament, more dominant and a bigger challenge, but, they are also better suited for some disciplines then females are. As an example, in my sport of choice there are no females competing that I am aware of. If I had a choice of a dog to have around me 24/7 it would be a female malinois of my choosing.

I have found that neither is any easier. In my experience it depends on the mix (always had mutts). I had a Chow/Border Collie male that was exceptional. No accidents in the house even as a puppy and I didn't leave him outside, I didn't crate train him, nor did I take him to obedience. He didn't need any of that. He just clicked with me and found his place. Man what a dog he was. (Although my husband tells me that he wasn't perfect, I just choose to block out any bad habits he had now that he's gone).
At the moment I have a female Lab mix and a male JRT mix. My male is definately more of a challenge.
Good question by the way.

Female dogs are easier to train, but male dogs respond more often and quicker than females once trained.

Sir J has good points about marking territory etc. I too have had more luck with females, but I think it was more about them 'fitting into the pack' a little faster. Males want to be the lead dog and they tend to fight you for that role. But saying that, I have had both and their training went well all around.

Love em both but female is my choice, they learn faster and are kinder, I think it is the mother instinct in them

You will get a hundred opinions on this but in my experience female, as they are less burdened with marking and pack behavior. Less dominant.

i have always had and prefered male dogs. females are less loyal and more independent. the males seem to learn faster and are smarter.
