Christians say that I need to accept god to go to heaven. I currently do not think he exists because I have no proof. The evidence is not there. However, let's say that I do want to accept god. I can't just say "I accept god" because he would know I really don't. I can't choose to believe in him any more than I can choose to believe in unicorns. But I still want to, so how do I do it?

By the way, me wanting to believe was hypothetical. I'm actually indifferent to it.

Let's try the Unicorn angle. Unicorns are mentioned in the Bible six times (Num 23:22 Num 24:8 Job 39:9 Job 39:10 Psa 29:6 Psa 92:10 ) and seem to be common place so how do we resolve this issue being as you do not believe in Unicorns? If you read you will start to see that this unicorn is a very strong and large animal. It could easily be consistent with what we know as a Rhino. Wow that was easy, now you can believe in Unicorns as outlined by the Bible.. Let's try that with GOD, in everything that lives there is a life force. It is the thing that animates the flesh or the plant or whatever is alive. Would you agree that there is a difference between life and death? Well now that is the spirit of GOD. We call that the Holy Spirit. If you can get this far then its only a hop skip and jump to GOD the Father and GOD the Son.
You asked I answered. GOD bless you.

This is going to sound cliche, and it might make you feel kinda dumb to try it, but the simple answer is: pray. Say, "God, I want to believe in you, but I don't. If you're real, please show me." Then, be patient. God knows how to speak to you.

I want to clarify that Christians say that one must accept Jesus to go to heaven. But for now, it's important that you first believe that God exists. Now, I can't prove to you that God exists. I can tell you to look at all of nature and really consider if there is another good explanation for all of its majesty. I can tell you to read the Bible (if you do, I suggest starting with the gospel of John), which is God's Word, and consider what it says. I would also suggest asking questions of Christians you know; find out why they believe. But the only way you will see God in any of this is to allow His Spirit to speak to you (i.e., keep an open mind).

I believe, not just because Scripture teaches it but because I've experienced it, that those who seek God will find Him. Best wishes.

This is a great question. The bible is full of the truth claims of God. It is in the Bible that God reveals Himself to man and reaches out to man so that we may know Him. It is in the bible that we start to have understanding of a God that is an infinite being with no top, sides or bottom. Since we are a created being and have a finite understanding of life and the cosmos it is reasonable that we can have misunderstandings and a real inability to grasp all that God is. The bible is only one source of learning about God. In the bible, which is written by men and authored by God, we are told that if we will pursue God, seek Him out, with all that we are, mind, body and soul that God will reveal Himself to us. This is not a revelation as in an idea, concept or belief system, this is God revealing Himself to you in real and tangible ways. When we pursue God we find that God's way is not our way and we always have the choice to accept or reject that God is who He says He is. If this was not the case it would really devalue the ability to have a personal relationship with God. It is our choice, God has already chosen to know you, now it is up to each of us; do we want to know God in person and have a personal relationship with Him?

First of all, I believe acceptance to be a bit of a misnomer, one doesn't accept first and then get faith -- it's the reverse, and if you have faith already, you just have it, don't you? God doesn't need a receipt.

Second, if you already have faith, it becomes all the proof you need. Many examples can be found in science itself when consensus became faith that overruled the reality that was found out many years later.

So you're right, you can't just say "I accept God". And "I still want to" doesn't cut it. You either believe or you don't, and any prayer of acceptance comes after, not before, your faith. It doesn't make sense any other way.

Just pray about it. Leave it to God. I used to feel that I do not measure up and I was feeling guilty over numerous things. Ask forgiveness for your sins, repent, and invite the Holy Spirit in your heart. Start to study the Bible. It is God's life manual for us. Written by humans but inspired by God.

Find yourself a church home. The church is not a building. The church is a community. The church is the hospital for sinners. Worship is for God.

Paul tells you how to become a Christian. James goes more into detail how to go about after we have accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior. There is not shortcuts to a spiritual maturity. Pray about it and give it time.

Very good question. The Bible teaches many are called but few are chosen. How would a man know that he is chosen and be among those that are chosen? The Bible says that those that seek the truth will find it. You say you have searched and have not found it to be true. The Bible teaches God reveals the truth through a gift from God and that gift is faith. How does one receive this gift of faith? The answer is we seek for truth and God gives us faith and through this faith comes revelation. My advice is to set aside that which a man has taught you and seek first above all else the truth that God gives. I would say open your heart to God and seek him through his word and in prayer and meditation. When we understand our need for God we seek him above all else and we receive the gift of faith and through this gift we receive revelation. knowing the truth that we are sinners and God is righteous and that we are not worthy we gain the understanding of the atonement provided us and if we accept this atonement we can then by faith say that we are saved but he who endures to the end is truly saved. Proof of the spiritual is not found with physical eyes. With physical eyes you see that which is physical and these things all perish. When seeking spiritual truth you must understand these things are revealed by God.

Wanting to believe is the equivalent of belief that is latent..hidden.

You already have it.

But youre trying to force your mind to provide an explanation.

Faith cannot be completely explained by the mind.

Because it is apart of the heart.

Its exactly like love. Love does not need logical explanations and does not need any either.

You should let your heart tell you where to look. Hope, is a sign of belief.

Talk to God out loud and ask Him to reveal the truth concerning His Son Jesus Christ to you personally. Read the gospel according to John (found in the New Testament of the Bible), and reserve your decisions until after you have finished reading it. When you are done reading the entire book of John, reflect on what it has said and let God's Spirit guide you.
