YES, it has many negative effects.
I've been using for a year.
It is great, but it dries out your skin. Moisturize daily.
Also, if you are allergic to benzoyl peroxide, it will be hell for you. Test on the back of your neck and wait 3 days. If no allergic reaction, you have the all clear.
The concentrations of benzoyl peroxide make your skin more prone to damage by the sun.
Wear an SPF of at least 15.
But overall, you will see a greeeaaaattt improvement with your acne.

My skin looked very clear and bright, but the down side was that it really dried out my skin in certain spots and it began to flake. I'm using an OTC product that contains similar ingredients now and I haven't seen a bump in weeks! Oh, and my skin is healthy and retains moisture. If you can handle the harshness of the ingredients of Proactiv, there shouldn't be any problems. Or, you can always use the system and buy a supplement moisturizer.

For external use only.
Do not use this medication if you have very sensitive skin or if you are sensitive to benzoyl peroxide.
Ask a doctor or pharmacist before use if you are using other topical acne medications at the same time or immediately following use of this product. This may increase dryness or irritation of the skin. If this occurs, only one medication should be used unless directed by a doctor.
When using this product
avoid contact with eyes. If contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
keep away from lips and mouth.
avoid unnecessary sun exposure and use a sunscreen.
this product may bleach hair or dyed fabrics.
Stop use and ask a doctor if irritation becomes severe.
Keep out of reach of children. If swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away.

I used it for 4mnths...and i agree with the rest of these posts...USE MOISTERIZER! Proactive does dry out the skin. It works too!
I stopped using it before my skin became dependent on it...I didn't want it to drain my spending money.
Anyway...I spoke with a dermatologist who gave me advice...she said to rinse my face off with cold water after the cleanser and moisterizer every night before bed. Cold water after moisterizer really helps my skin...also I cut way back on dairy products and my face has totally cleared up.
Maybe some of this stuff I've mentioned will help you. I HATE ACNE!

i used to have bad acne in high school and i tried everything including proactive. and honestly all it did for me was make everything twice as bad. it really depends on what kind of skin type you have. if you skin is naturally dry or oily, i would go with something else. because your body is going to counter-react the medicine. if your skin is dry, it will make it to the point of painful. if your skin in oily, the meds will dry it up, but your body will produce twice as much to try and "be normal" so just be ready for anything. try asking a dermatologist about natural hormonal treatments, like low estrogen. stuff found in birth control pills. that's what finally cleared it up for me. but don't try without Dr instructions.

ALL acne medicines make you break out before making it better. I would see a dermatologist if I were you. I've tried everything and nothing worked until I saw a doctor who oversaw my treatment. Proactive never worked for me, but they have a money back gaurantee.

With proactive, you will most likely break out at first while your skin adjusts to the medication...after that settles down, posative signs will appear.

It's always a possibility. The main ingredients are glycolic acid and salicylic acid. These are found in most over the counter products. I suggest you see a good dermatologist.
