Somebody is trying to tell me it's dangerous or harmful to the microwave... unless you can convince me, I'm not buying it.

I just got Alton Brown's new cookbook "I'm Just Here For The Food V.2.0" for Christmas.I've almost read it cover-to cover already.
He has a recipe for microwave popcorn that involves jarred store-bought popcorn. He reccomends putting it in a brown paper lunch-bag,and STAPLING the bag shut!
He also goes on to say the he has gotten many many angry emails about how you're NOT suppossed to put metal of ANY kind in the microwave. But here's the beauty thing.....his WHOLE cookbook not only gives you recipes, but it explains the science behind the recipes!
He has a WHOLE section on microwaving. Not my favorite way to cook, but I still read it.He explains that, because the length of the staples are shorter than the length of the microwave it's self, there is no problem.I won't go into the physics here. You can buy his book if you want to learn more, but he says that 2 staples in the top of the popcorn bag is perfectly safe!
If that's the case then I certainly wouldn't worry about a staple in a tea-bag!
Just make sure that you don't put anything else made of metal in there!

Only danger is that the Staples might get VERY hot (maybe so hot that the bag burns around the Staple).

When they first came out, Microwaves would 'burn out' real easy if any metallic object was put in them.

But any Microwave made in the last 10 - 20 years should not be damaged - mine even has a metal tray and metal stand for putting Pizza's on - and has survived being turned on by accident after the Pizza was taken out ...

Danny is right, the lwavelength of a microwave is acually several cm long, longer than a staple.

i've never heard of there being a problem with it. otherwise wouldn't there be a different method of closing the bags? i'm sure there would be a warning on the box about it.

No - you can even put tin foil in it if it is wrapped around something. You can put a spoon in the micro if it is in a glass of water.
