I work in the industry, and for a 40", you're best off getting a Samsung. They do 40" in the following models:
le40s73bdx
le40r74bdx
le40n73bdx
Personally, I'd probably go for a 42", either the Toshiba 42wlt66 or the Sharp lc42xd1e, which both have full high definition resolution instead of just HD-Ready.
I should also mention the Samsung LE40F71B, which is Blu-Ray ready too. I'm not 100% sure what this entails, as the info for Blu-Ray hardware tends to blind you with technobabble without actually telling you what you want to know. This model is way overpriced though. You could get a nice 47" for what this costs.

The Samsung 40" LCDs have the best picture because of some feature they have called "DNie". Nobody's been able to explain to me just what the heck it is, but whatever it is, it makes the Samsung stand out. I just bought one after comparing it to 10 other brands. The others had a haziness that the Samsung didn't have, and even after attempting to adjust the brightness (and other) controls on the various other models the Samsung still had the best and brightest picture. I bought the LNS4041DX model for only $1299.00 which also made it a great value!

The best: Sony XBR 2 or 3. They are the same just come in different color bezels
Next best Samsung LN-S4096D or the LN-S4095
I actually could not choose between the Sony or the Samsung so you will probably have to choose based on looks. Both TVs are awesome, for an LCD

In the latest WHICH reports, Pioneer came out tops along with Panasonic. They were the top 2. Sony came in just behind them. Not a great deal in it to be honest. If I was buying one like you I would be looking at Sony because I have owned them in the past and the brand has a good image. Plus they always look smart in the living room. You lucky devil. Try Richer Sounds for best prices.

Panasonic are the best LCD tv's but if you are after value for money get an Acer.They have a good clear picture, a good warrenty and are verry competativley priced. If i was going to buy one it would have to be the Acer
