i have had severe back pain for several months now. i recently had an mri done and went to my doctor today for the results. she told me that i have severalbuldged disks but that is normal for a person my age<29> and that from what she has seen on the mri i shouldnt have as much pain as i say i have . then she did a resistence test on my legs and i was unable to raise my left leg against the resistence of her hand. again she insisted that the mri didnt suggest anything that would cause leg weakness.. i guess what it all boils down to is that she is calling me a liar, and saying i am faking symptoms to get pain meds, but that is not true i do have severe chronic pain, and it keeps me from participating in normal daily activities someone give me a suggestion or at least tell me if the buldged disks are normal or capable of causing my pain then i will consider finding a new doctor or at least reporting my findings to my current doctor to see what she has to say

Rule of thumb, if you are unsatisified with a diagnosis from one Dr get a second opinion.

You won't like my answer but you don't have any ruptured discs just bulges. You need physical therapy, some ibuprofen and time as most bulging disc pain will resolve if given enough time (3-9 months) where as taking pain pills for bulging discs can turn into a major problem. Sounds to me as if the Dr is giving you accurate and helpful info. Go to a chiropractor, go to physical therapy and most of all be patient. I had an MRI in April after hurting my back in January. About October my back finally quit hurting from bulging discs injured in January. Yes it was slow to heal but I'm very glad that I didn't opt for surgery or other options that would have just created additional problems. good luck.

"Bulged" (herniated) discs are NOT normal, especially in an otherwise healthy male of 29. You need a second opinion and perhaps a new physician. There certainly are other options besides pain medicine, and your physician should review them all with you and together you choose which of them to apply.

Your pain is the result of pressure and irritation on the nerves as they exit your spinal column. It is not fake pain; it is real and it can certainly be debilitating...it ended my career years ago. I've been on Social Security disability since 1993. So - you're not alone. Do get that second opinion. And consider later whether or not you need a new personal physician.

I went to an orthopedic surgeon because my knee was very painful. I was given 2 x-rays and nothing was found to be wrong. My knee kept cracking and grinding. This happened in front of the doctor. I received 3 shots in the knee to thicken the fluid in the knee. It was still hurting. Finally, the doctor scoped the knee cap and found the problem. My cartlidge was cracked and the doctor did surgery. He filed back the cartlidge. Sometimes when nothing is shown, it means that a different angle should be shown.

well im 21, and i have one bulged disk, and it casues me a great deal of pain, so i can understand the several bulged disks making you uncomfortable. no, its not normal, its becasue of bad posture/heredity, if your parents have bad backs, or being in a severe accident that caused your back to go out, i had all three. what i do, is stand up straight when i walk and stand, sit up right in a chair, with a rolled towel or pillow behind the lower back, get some arch supports for your shoes, and at night when you sleep, sleep on your side, with a folded pillow in between your knees, and one arm under your head with your back as straight as possible. its good that your not going after pain meds, but just knwo, that i tried that method, and it makes you feel better for a while, but it doesnt help long term pain, try walking everyday too, just around the block or get some excersize, no matter how much it hurts, it will get better. as for your doctor, no i dont think shes crazy, i think she has to watch out for her practice when denying you treatment by meds, she needs to make sure that you are 100% serious, tho i believe you are. my doc is crazy, he gave me prozac for back pain.... thats a quack...

You do not give enough history about yourself and this problem and the meds you have already taken. Sounds like her mind is made up and telling her what you've found on Yahoo Answers isn't going to change it. If you are not drug seeking, get another opinion. If you are, be honest with her and ask for her help. She can and will point you in the right direction.

You need to see another doctor right away. I had a similar situation where I was in and out of the hospital for a 2 month period with chest pains. They constantly told me everything was fine and that there is no reason for my chest to be in that kind of pain. I finally went to another doctor and guess what, it turns out I had a partially collapsed lung. This explained the pain and because of the proper diagnosis, I am now fine.

bulged disks are NOT normal. you need to find a good sports medicine or osteo specialist. to help with this. Change to another doctor. And yes, bulged disks are the cause of severe pain, because they pinch the spinal nerves. However, large amounts of pain meds don't help theproblem. you need exercises, and possibly surgery. Don't ask for pain meds, ask for a referal to a physiotherapist.

Find a physical therapist that does manual manipulations. They are way better than a chiropractor and should be able to help with the pain, without meds! And yes, I'd find a new Dr.!

same thing here. Went to a chiropractor with a Drx 9000 spinal decompression machine. Greatly relieved pain and increased mobility.
