I am so sorry to hear about your situation.
Keep calling around for a veterinarian who can make a house call. Call all the area veterinarians and shelters. Someone is sure to know of someone. Please do not try to take his life yourself. They can do it humanely and in a painless manner. Your dog will just go to sleep.
I know how this must feel for you and I am very sorry. Dogs just get old.

That is not a good idea, if a humane society or ASPCA should find out about this or someone with them should log on and see this question then they will have the authority to find out who you are and take your beloved pet from you and then you really wouldn't get to see him pass into the next life. See if you can arrange for your vet to go to your car and administer the final shot. I know that it is hard but if he is in as bad of shape as you let on here then you will be doing him a favor by taking him to the vet. As the vet is administering the shot close your eyes and imagine that you're with him at home. I am sooooooo very sorry that you are about to lose your baby but he will be in a better place and not suffering any longer.
Oh by the way, by NO MEANS take the so-called "advice" of ccudd13 it will only get you into more trouble than you would want for taking his life in a violent way, you will be charged with cruelity to an animal and will be arrested go before a judge and my not be allowed to own another pet. You sound like you are a REAL dog lover and I don't want to think of you going through that kind of trouble because of some person's fresh fingertips!

That's terrible that your vet won't come out to the house! Mine charges $75 for a house call (which they didn't charge me). He even came out to my house after an emergency kept him late at the clinic. He worked from 7am-930pm that day because he cares about his patients and their owners. I felt the same way about my dog dying in a place that he hated.
I hoped that my Maverick would just pass peacefully in his sleep too. It sounds so morbid, but I woke up every morning hoping to find him dead. I just didn't want to have to make the decision.
In the end, my family, friends, and my vet all agreed that Maverick knew I was not ready to let him go and that he would hold on as long as he could regardless of his quality of life, for my sake.
It's NOT by any means an easy decision, but take it from me, don't wait for your dog to pass on his own. Do you live in the country? I can't imagine that there isn't a farm vet that would make house calls? And if you're in the city, I would think the number of vets would be high enough that you would be able to find someone...
I'm terribly sorry for what you're going through. I just went throgh it in May of this year. Maverick was 15.
My thoughts are with you.

Don't do this yourself - You risk putting the dog in more pain and having it suffer even more!
If you can't find a Mobile Vet, call your vets office and arrange for them to come out to your car and give the final shot. That way, the dog gets to go for a ride and NOT have to go into the vets office.

You should try contacting a vet the does not usually deal with dogs and cats; those kind of vets don't make house calls. But large animal vets do,it would be best that you didn't take matters into your own hands.

I just had my 12 year old shih tzu to sleep last night. I went to the emergency vet at 930 and she had to be put down. But they didnt charge me for the emergency visit. (they said since it was christmas) I know there are vets out there that have a good heart and would come to your house. You just have to find the right one. Im really sorry for you and your little dog.

Another alternative is to locate a vet., who practices holistic medicines such as spirituality, acupuncture/acupressure to name a few. The vet can determine if you dog is ready to go on to another life. If not they can also help them cross over if they are not ready. I know I may sound crazy, but I was able to hear of a local vet, give a lecture at my university, or else I would not believe it either. Its another alternative to pursue and you both may find some peace. Good luck.

i honestly suggest that you take him to a vet, you arent trained to administer those kind of things, and god forbid you dont give enough or give too much.... that could cause the WORST pain and discomfort, and may not kill him at all.
the most caring thing you could do would be to bring him to a vet. our vet gave us a private room and lots fo time before and after with our dog when we had to put her down. please do the right thing and go to a vet.
only a vet knows how and when to do it. im sure if you express these feelings to your vet they will be accommodating.

The vets a have worked for would go to the home of the owner if they wanted. See if there is a vet that will do that for you.

First, let me offer my sympathy! We had to have one of our 3 cats put down about 2 wks. ago, and it's tough~but you have to have it done so your dog doesn't suffer. Take him to the vet, even 'tho he is scared. They can give him a sedative which will make him very drowsy and out of it. You'll be able to hold him and stroke him lovingly while the drug takes effect. Then once he's pretty much out of it, they'll give him the drug which will put him out of his misery. We did it this way w/a cat last winter. It was calm and peaceful and we were able to spend some time w/him alone in a little room while he went into his slumber.
