With all due respect the previous answers are wrong.

There is no difference. "Ticket" is just the common term for what the law calls a citation. Any citation is to cite you for breaking the law. Citations are usually used for infractions, minor violations for which you cannot go to jail but can only be fined. Sometimes you are cited "into court" in which case the citation tells you to appear. In such cases the offense may be a misdemeanor and you will find out when you make the appearance.

It is the term used by the department and the court.

In most cases actually a "ticket" or a citation are legally nothing but a summons to appear in court. On most you may have a option of paying them instead of appearing.

in some areas the difference is whether they are being written for state court or a city court. For the city, they issue a citation for a city law,

But in basis they are really one and the same

A ticket is pretty much a fine.
A citiation is requiring you to do something within a given period of time. Example- 30 days to change the address on your license if you've moved.
