Dogs should be bathed infrequently - only as needed. More than once a week is typically excessive. At the most a (typical) dog doesn't need a bath more than once every two weeks. I suggest that you get some "doggy wipes" for in between. They don't have the alcohol of baby wipes which will excessively dry a dog's skin, but will remove most dirt and smell from the dog.

I'm a pet groomer and I can always tell as soon as I see and feel the dog's coat whether it's over-bathed at home, and/or when human products are used. With that said:

You really don't want to give more than one bath every two weeks. Some dogs can handle more, some dogs can't even handle being bathed that frequently.

Bathe your dog however often you like (we can't stop you!) but pay attention so that you will notice if your dog's skin or hair are getting damaged. Watch for itchiness, scratching, red spots, excessive flaking, excessive stink or oil, and dry/brittle hair.

Do NOT use human shampoo or conditioner, *especially* if you are bathing your dog often. If you are bathing your dog as frequently as every week, go to a pet store and get a high quality dog shampoo (and dog conditioner, if you like) . That's very important for the health of your dog's skin and coat.

I bathe my dog at least 2 times a week. Sometimes that changes depending on what she discovered outside

Frequent baths can dry the natural oils in canine skin and lead to constant scratching, which in turn can lead to bacterial infections and oozing hot spots.

For dogs that get bathed more than once a month, aloe-based shampoos and coat conditioners and foods and supplements with Omega fatty acids help maintain coat oils and skin health.

* Before bathing, clear any mats or tangles from Gingers coat.
* Teach her to stand in the tub, then add warm or tepid water.
* Soak her to the skin, lather, then rinse thoroughly to prevent dull, sticky coat and dry skin.
* Take care to keep water and soap out of her eyes and ears and clean her face and the insides of her ears with a sponge or washcloth.

Unless he gets skunked or something I would not bathe the dog too often cuz dogs have really sensitive skin.
