I think my house is haunted, who do I consult to find out more and get rid of the ghosts?

I know this sounds rather far fetched, but my house is 150 year old, my cat keeps freaking out and making terrible wailing noises and running away from something, several times a day, and I once experienced a shadow and someone brushing past me, but there was nobody else in the house. I'm a bit spooked, more concerned about the cat being upset than me. Any (genuine) advice appreciated. I am a bit of a sceptic when it comes to the paranormal but I am convinced there is some sort of presence in the house. I live near Glasgow in Scotland.

I actually had a similar occurrence. I felt that I was being watched and once in a while something would fall off a shelf for no apparent reason.

I stood in the middle of the kitchen and spoke, "Either find a way of letting me know what you want or get out!" I felt as if a liquid was oozing out of my pores. and then nothing. A stark feeling of being alone.

In another apartment, I believed I had some very scary spirits taunting me. During one episode my cat went bonkers and frantically jumped against a wall again and again. I had someone pray over me (I am not at all religious, by the way) and put up symbols against the evil eye in each room. I felt ridiculous, but it was better than being terrified. It was advised that I invoke the name of god every time I feel terrorized. i have no idea if the terror was externally or internally caused, but I had a way of dealing with it that seemed to work.

The other night I had a nightmare revisiting those fearful episodes, but in my dream I invoked the name of god and I woke up unafraid.

Ghosts do not exist.

Death severes all ties a human being has with the physical world. Thus if you have things moving, and physical presence that can be felt, this is not a human soul.

I repeat, humans who are allowed to come down to earth-and mind you these are very rare- cannot touch, move objects.

Only spirits of the underworld can, and they are either evil or good.

Notice I said spirits, these are non human beings who are invisible to the naked eye.

Most of the good ones dont even let humans know theyre in the house unless theyre trying to warn you of something.

The bad ones can bother you when youre trying to sleep. Chances are if anyone has done Ouija boards in the house, this is an evil presence.

Do a praying/cleansing of the area. Make sure you enter each room one by one and ask God to remove the being for you.

Do not trust any humans, as they might use other beings to do this for you. Why clean out the trash with trash?

Pray wholely to God...and if nothing else works. Live with it till you can move on.

It's possible that there are supernatural forces at work in your house. I wouldn't be too concerned, since I've never heard any reports of people or animals being harmed by ghosts. I have a friend who lives in a 200 year old mansion, and he's had many experiences with a ghost named Charlene - the spirit actually went so far as to speak and appear to his 3 year old sister (which is how his family knows the ghost's name).

These things can be very disconcerting, but there isn't really any threat. If you continue to be freaked out, you can probably call a priest or a pastor and they'll be happy to do an exorcism. Or you can contact one of those "ghost buster" type documentary shows, and they'll probably pay you a lot of money to put your old Scottish house on TV, make a lot of drama, scan your house with different gadgets, and tell you theres nothing to worry about.

to be honest
cats will freak out in any new place .. i have experienced it with my own cat in 3 different houses ... but they do settle in time
and an old house like that will have ghosts ... but this probably isnt what you think
it is not the dead coming back
but just remenants of the past ( the shadow you mentioned ) ... an energy that has lingered
but in time again this will fade as you put your own mark on the house
also remember that with any old house , there will be strange noises , creaky floor boards , old pipes etc and those noises take some getting used to

If you just feel spooked, and there's no real harm being done, then I would advise against trying to get rid of the ghosts.
Instead, you should first try to accept their presence, and get them to accept yours. Don't get too creeped out, because they're not likely to try to harm you, and if you don't give them the emotional energy to feed on they won't have the power to harm you. You have to keep control of the situation, though, which may be difficult.

If you want to get rid of them, you could try smudging the house with sage. Be sure you open a door, to give them a way out. But if you do this, you should think of it like a favor (showing them the way forward into the next life), and not a banishing.

If that doesn't work, try a search on Google for a paranormal investigator near Glasgow. They could tell you how to proceed. The URL below is a start...

You say you're a bit of a sceptic - hold true to the conviction then - the presense is in your mind and nothing to fear. If you hear a noise, investigate it. If you see something, take a closer look - turn lights on. Take pictures. Examine the presence under the microscope of your calm, rational mind and you'll find the only entity playing tricks on you is your own mind.

I live in Fife in Scotland and have shared similar experiences. The last house I lived in was an old farmhouse on the back of a hill and it was haunted. The spirits were never malevolent but they were seen, heard and felt by all of us in the house (my mum and I are sensitives but my dad, sister and her fiance are a bit more sceptical). When we moved from the house a few months ago, I had 3 experiences just in the one day of people moving around, walking up behind me and stepping out at me while I walked past doorways.

Anyway, when we first moved there, there was a horrible presence in my bedroom. I just had a feeling a black figure was standing in the corner of my room, just watching. Once, I even felt I had to get out of there for no reason at all. I'm not afraid of the dark, but at night I would leave either my music or light on (sometimes both). My reiki master told me to burn white sage and waft it around all corners of the room and ask for Archangel Michael 3 times to help the spirit to move towards the white light. Afterwards, the room felt horrible, but I knew I had to stay there that night to assert my authority and show that it was my space now. I'd never been so frightened! lol. In the morning, it was gone and I didn't have trouble from him again.

Another suggestion would be to look through the local papers for local spiritualist churches. They would be able to put you in contact with reputable mediums who would be able to help you. For info on ousting unwanted spirits from your place of residence you could call the Discovery Channel. Why, because during the month of Oct they aired specials about the paranormal and the removal of the unwanted. From what I gather sometimes it takes a team of specialists consisting of priests, clairvoyants, psychics and etc. But in the mean time you can try to expel the ghosts yourself.
Order them in the name of God they are to leave and never again return. Be firm and be forthright as well as fully having faith in our Lord. They cannot deny the power of the the ultimate Spirit Open all your windows so they have an avenue to exit easily. You may want to back all this up with the burning of frankincense and of sage while chanting prayer alternating this with your repeated request that they MUST leave in the NAME OF GOD.

Good luck, keep in mind that not all spirits that stay in our realm of existence are evil, some are lost, or waiting for a loved one, just curious, or are not ready to leave a life they may not have wanted to be taken away from.

Caroline could it be possible someone is harassing you?It sounds as though someone might be trying to scare you.You never did say what your house is doing.There is lots of old houses and because they are old they may have noises such as skreaks,but I have to admit I am a skeptic maybe you should take the cat to the vet to make sure he is healthy I would check all possibilties before believing in the paranormal God says He does not give us a spirit of fear

if you're being severe, then there's a e book with the help of hanz halbert (some thing like that) and also you may e mail him and in many circumstances he will come for your position and get data and do different issues. Then I recommend talking to a priest about an exorcism. Its not as person-friendly as come bless my residing house. they ought to practice for it and get approval from the vatican. try burning sage in all corners and elements of the residing house and declaring some thing alongside the lines of bless this residing house and all who're in it, enable no damage come to all of us in this section (so conceal each section). White candles also help. mild them and tell the ghost they are useless an bypass into the white mild that their loved ones are waiting for them on the different area. Get some crosses and holy water.
