I believe religion can be a very positive influence. It can give one the strength to carry on through the hard times. It can give you a lifeline when you are feeling overwhelmed. It should be the basis for how you live your life. However, there are those individuals that take the word and twist it to suit their own agendas and then religion can become a dangerous tool used to make others fall into line with the wrong point of view of it.

They have both positively and negatively affected society.
Positively by:
Inspiring man to attain
Nurturing the spirit
Promoting creativity
Driving man to question
Teaching compassion and altruism
Stimulating self-control and self-discipline
Organizing man for unselfish service
Negatively by:
Leading to misunderstanding
Causing multiple wars
Suppressing scientific as well as philosophic growth
All of the negative aspects of religion I only see when man tries to crystallize the truth into organized and orthodox religious traditions. True religion will surpass these trials and triumph over pride, self-aggrandizement, misunderstanding, and hatred.
The problems with religion not only can be overcome, but Are Being overcome.

I think that the loud, outspoken, hard core extermist of ANY group, for all of time, have had generally negative influences, because they were what got the most attention through history, and now through media.
But in general, the quite, everyday believers, of ANY religion, probably influnced smaller impact, soon forgotten, positive things.

Two words bub: RELIGIOUS GENOCIDE.
Positive or negative is up to you to decide.... and I suppose, if youre doing the ethnic cleansing, its a positive thing. If youre being cleansed, not so positive....

Every religion - every one of them - is a cult. Nonsensical placebo for mankind. Here we are... 2007... and the dark ages continue to prevail. I find it absolutely dumbfounding.

Overall they all seem pretty positive, despite a few peoples tendencies to strap explosives to small children.

I think it causes a lot of confusion and strife myself. Look at all of the "holy" wars and crusades that have gone on throughout history.
