This anxiety came on suddenly.
There is no apparent reason to me for his sudden panting, pacing etc.
He used to enjoy the ride.

Dogs with strong prey drives seem to be more anxious in cars than other dogs. That is because there is so much activity going on outside the car...so much quick movement. Their instincts are telling them to react, but they can't react quickly enough. Sometimes, when car travel is new, dogs are more interested in what is going on inside the car than outside. After they are more used to car travel, the prey drive can kick in.

I'm sure the others are correct about his sudden change - perhaps his last car ride was not a pleasant experience. Also pay attention to the car's environment - was it too hot? or crowded?

In order to move past this I would suggest you get him a car harness. My dog likes to feel secure in the car so something to hold him steady helps. Also, it helps keep your dog safe if you were to ever be in an accident.

If he doesn't like the harness then I would try re-acclimating him to the car. Let him sit in it with you then get in and out without having gone anywhere. Give him treats and praise when he sits down quietly. If possible, let him ride with you to a place where he can enjoy himself - the park, the pet store. Praise him the whole time.

Good luck! We've been working on car rides for a couple of months with my new puppy and he still doesn't like it, but he's learned to just lay down and deal with it.

Is it possible that you ran over the vibration guards the are installed in certain road areas to keep drivers alert? The loud noise can frighten a dog and cause him/her to not want to rise in the car again.

Something, somewhere has spooked the dog. Maybe a sudden fast stop, a slight slide of the car in water, snow or ice.

How old is your dog?? Maybe he just gets nervous or thinks he's going to the vet or some other place that he's not quite fond of.
