My previous question was posed incorrectly. I want to go big boar hunting and I am acquiring a 44 mag lever action rifle for long distance shots. If I were to be confronted by a wild boar, would a 45 calibre model 1911 A1 be better than a 357 magnum for up close and personal hunting?

RIFLE. Last time i went bore hunting we got charged and my 45 ACP bounced off the sucker's head. My buddy took it out with a broad side shot of a 30/30. But the 30/30 would not be my favorite. If you have a semi 308, then take it.

They are thicker and tougher then they look. Go for penetration over stopping power, and leave the hand guns holstered.

A .44 Magnum carbine is strictly a short-range rifle and probably the minimum for the bigger boars. As I already stated, the .45acp is NOT a hunting round. You'd be better off with a .44 Mag revolver to match your carbine. If you insist on using a .357 Mag, then load heavy hard-cast bullets and use a .357 Mag revolver with a 4 to 6" barrel.

Leave that 1911 at home if you are boar hunting. The .45acp is not, nor was ever intended to be a hunting round.

Of the 2 choices the .45 will hit harder up close. As to the .44mag, I'd keep the shots close. It's marginal for big boars. You can take one with proper shot placement though. I took a boar with my bow and with a quartering away shot, he went less than 30 yards. With any weapon you use hunting is about taking the proper shot. Know where the vitals are and you will be all set. Good luck on your hunt.
