I came home to find that my hanging bar in my closet has come out of the wall. It has come completely out of the "sockets". I am aware that the bar could not hold the weight of all the clothes and coats on it. How do I put it back up? Glue, plaster, drilling? I would like to fix it and prevent it from happening again.

If the "sockets" are still secure in the wall, purchase a new rod as the one you have has probably bent . Purchase an additional bracket to mount in the center of the new rod for extra support.

If the "socket" is stripped, mount boards to the ends of your closets, making sure to screw/nail them into studs. Obtain new closet rods from your hardware store and purchase an additional bracket to mount in the center of your rod for extra support.

Closet Bar Brackets

Try running a couple of board from front to back on each side of the closet. You should be able to hit at least 4 studs, and this will give your brackets plenty of support. Years ago, they would drill a hole or a half moon in the board that supported the closet bar without the need for any fancy brackets. This will be quite strong. However, for an investment of $25-$45, this could be a great time to invest in a closet organizer, clean out the closet and greatly increase closet space and usability.
