On my camera (Sony DCR-HC96) you can choose between 12 and 16bit sound. Which is better for higher quality sound? What is the difference?

Analog sound is digitized. If you use 12 bits, you can have 2^12 posiible sound levels = 4,096 levels.
If you use 16 bits, you will get 2^16 = 65,536 levels. More is better in this case (better sound quality, less quantization noise).
But nothing is free. Assuming no compression, for the same recording time 16-bits sound will take about 33% more space than 12 bits.

16 bit has higher sound resolution but will take up more storage space than 12 bit
