I am doing a paper for a college course on women in law enforcement and was wondering if there are any female officers out there who can share a little bit about an problems you may have faced upon entering the field of law enforcement. Any kinds of discrimination or harassment, problems with being promoted...that sort of thing. If anyone would be willing to correspond and allow me to use some of their experiences for my paper, I'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks in advance.

This paper is for a Diversity in Law Enforcement class and I am looking for all types of experiences, both positive and negative. I am not a criminal justice major and have no interest in becoming a police office, so I have no idea as to what types of things female officers may encounter. From what i have read in my textbook, women have faced a great deal of negativity and i am just looking to see what i can find as fair as personal experiences. My paper is actually on the positives of woman in law enforcement.

ok, it looks like all your answers so far are from men. So much for you getting a serious answer. I have encountered a lot of both in my years as a officer. I personally think it depends on your supervisor and the other cops you work close with on a daily basis. I have had some great encouraging supervisors and co workers who treated me like one of the guys and we were like family. On the other hand I have worked with men in my field and walked in on conversations about my bra size. I have had a few problems with over zealous co workers but I straightened that out in a hurry. It is not nearly as hard now as it was 20 years ago for women in Law Enforcement. I had a female Sergeant and she told me some stories that would definatley get people fired nowadays. As far as the other people responding to your question, I do not feel you are fishing for negativity. I do feel we are not treated equally and probably never will be. I am good at what I do and have received the promotions I was due. Others have not been as luck as I. I am not bitter. I love my job but caution some women before entering the field as people can be cruel. I am also prior military so I have dealt with this type of thing before. I am married and at times I still get frustrated with some of the immature people I work with saying things that they wouln't say to a guy but my purpose is to serve and protect. Not care what they think about me.

Sweetgal - I noticed you're fishing for negative information - how were you harrassed as a female cop - and not something more generic - what's it like to be a female police officer. Or something on the positive side - How can you make a difference as a female police officer that male cops can't? Ask for the positive and you're likely to get more responses.

You're not pre-disposed by saying female police officers get harrassed everywhere, all the time, are you? That wouldn't be a good educational experience. Ask a generic question and see where the facts take you....good luck!

Let me give you a man's two cents.

There is a perception that because women are less physically capable of taking control of a large, dangerous assailant, they are more likely to resort to their weapons. Male officers tend to be more confident in their physical abilities and are therefore less likely to shoot someone.

I just think it's so cute when girls play dress up in uniforms and pretend to be real cops.
