Each figher has their own preference to mouth peices. They buy them at MA stores just like an amateur does, only they might have an agent do it for them. I think a good majority use just one in the upper jaw. I did when I fought proffesionaly and amateur USA Karate. I always stuck to the single upper piece melted to my teeth and mouths form for best fit.

A double piece with a whole I always found to be to difficult to breathe well. Wearing to single pieces for upper and lower were just not practical for me so I stuck with the upper and I really think most UFC fighters do too.

Many use the double-sided but find that eventually you end up biting through the mouthpiece. Almost all fighters use a mouth guard with some type of hard plastic on the front to give extra protection from strikes to the teeth. If you are looking to compete you may want to experiment with a couple different styles, as all mouths, comforts and needs are different.

Guys I think you will find that Pro athletes use custom made mouth guards. Fighters normally wear just upper mouth pieces, this proves so much easier as with the upper and lower all in one guards you have to keep your teeth clenched to hold them in.
Custom made mouth guards are moulded to the athletes mouth, so that they fit perfectly. It's the best thing that I have ever bought for Martial arts. I wear it every time I train and have had it for over 3 years. OK it probably cost me $90 but if I break that down to how often I have used it, it is well worth it.
Come on we all know they are customised, doesn't anyone remember the picture of Andre Alovski with his Mouthpiece with fangs on it???

It's possible to purchase a custom mouth guard. They really are the best since it provides the most protection, stays in place, and makes it easy to speak and breath. However, be prepared to fork over at least $40. Next to that I like the traditional upper mouth guard. Shock Doctor makes good ones.

Almost all mma guys use a single piece that covers the upper teeth. The guys that you see fighting on television all get theirs made at a dentist. The guys in the smaller shows typically go with "Bite Me" or "OPro."
