I heard that tattoo artists use stensils when giving a tattoo, I found some really cool rose tattoos on the internet and I wanted to get one of them so can I take it in? Does the whole stensil thimg mean that you have to pick a design that's in the shop or can you bring a design of your own?

A great tattoo artist wants nothing more than for YOU to be happy with the work they're doing. The vast majority prefer people to come up with or draw original designs, this ensures the customer is happy with their piece and it keeps the artist from being bored tattooing the same crap over and over. I would suggest bringing your design to an artist, give them like 20 bucks and let them take their time to re-draw it the way they would need to tattoo it, remember not everything on paper can translate to skin. Nine times out of ten their design will be just as good or even better then what you gave them, and of course if your not 100% sure about it, don't put it on your body forever!

Of course you can bring your own in! Tattoos wouldn't be as popular as they are if you could only pick a pre-stenciled design.

What I did was talk to my tattoo artist and explain what I wanted and the size I wanted them. He then drew up some ideas and I approved the one I wanted.

Make sure you see the final design before the artist begins though!

You can bring your own design in and they will stensil it for the tattoo. A stensil is only used for placement and to make sure they stay in place.
Hope this helps and happy tattooing!

Bring your design with you when you go to make an appointment. Either that, or you can ask them to draw their own out of your idea. Most good tattoo artists are really good a drawing. They'll make up a "stencil" out of whatever design you pick at the one you want. The "stencil" is kind of like a temporary tattoo that they stick on you when they start so they're less likely to screw something up. Good luck.

what is meant by stencil is that they can take any design (even one you bring in) and they copy it on a special machine that makes a transferable stencil that will go onto your skin. so it is not a "stencil" like you may be thinking. you can bring in whatever piece of art you wish but do know that a competent artist will most likely make some changes to the design in order to make it look as good as possible on your skin. good luck with your tattoo!1

The word stencil bugs me. It brings back memories of those cardboad cut-outs of dinosaurs and what not. Tattoo artists, no matter how skilled, will use some sort of "stencil". Whether it's something prefabricated from their "wall of art" or an original piece, it will be turned into a sort of temporary tattoo. Then placed on the skin and used more like a guide rather than a "fill-in-the-blank". Some more skilled tattoo artists fore go this proceedure, however, they will always at least draw something on the skin as a guide rather than freehand a tattoo.

Oh, trust me; any tattoo artist can use your design; they seldom work using stancils; opting more for original designs. Just look at the TV show "Miami Ink" on TLC; these guys always look for original designs that they can add to their portfolios. Much like what a photographer or a fashion designer does; tattoo artists love the challenge of working on original designs.

I should know, I dated a female tattoo artist a long time ago. :D

Many places let you bring in your own design, some dont, but most do, sometimes they use the design and freehand it, or trace it, sometimes they make a stencil.

It all depends on the place.

MOST OF THE TIME they like you to bring in your own design. My mom has 2...one she designed, and one she said she wanted a butterfly and they designed it for her. They can do that too...design it for you. Most of the Tat's they have advertising, are just to give you ideas!

Hope I helped,
