Better to believe than to not if there is, as opposed to the other way around.

It's not equal. If I say I have a dragon in my living room, is that opinion equal to yours that I don't? Of course not. God is ridiculously improbable to the point that there's really no reason to believe. But it seems like you're trotting out Pascal's wager again, which as been shot down SO many times.

Too many idiots keep attributing human qualities to God. Pride is a human quality that God would not have. Therefore God is not sitting up in heaven looking down and getting pissed off at people who do not "suck up" to God through prayer and the bombing of abortion clinics. Live your life well and do not intentionally hurt others. Stop blindly following false prophets and become a humble, gentle leader and you will gain immortality.

Faith is the difference between life in paradise or life separated from your maker. For your sake I pray God shows you a personal sign. There are signs everywhere of His eternal hand. Can you look to the heavens on a clear blue sky and think it is coincidence. Or the love in an 80 year old couple and not see God's hand helping them even though they struggle helping each other? God is as real as the nose on your face, you just need to keep yourself open to His miracles!

Because the Bible, in my humble opinion, is ludicrous. I could hold truer to The Lord of the Rings as a fact-based text than I can the Bible.
That's why. It's a book that, to me, is silly, and yes, I've read it.

the problem is that the debate is not more or less equal. christianiity has never been able to answer well at all to skeptical arguments. the best it can say is "well, it all works out in the end" and "NOT believing in the bible is the devil"
no one is going to heaven by taking Pascal's wager, my friend.

Why can't people just have their own beliefs and respect others for having different ones?
I couldn't care less about what others believe, as long as they do not try to change MY beliefs/non-beliefs.
It is a very personal issue and to be honest I am so sick of this Yahoo Answers being cluttered with so much crap about religion, athiest bashing, christian bashing, gay bashing, etc.
You believe is something? FINE... believe in it and shut up!

Why not believe in Santa too? I mean if he is real you might get more Christmas presents and if he isn't and you believe than no harm done. The same can be said for any number of imaginary beings but you can't force yourself to *believe* what is unbelievable.

Some find it hard to believe on talking snakes, 5000 people eating just a few fish and 5 loaves, people walking on water, and being raised from the dead.

The answer to that is frankly that it is NOT better to believe just in case.
The second part of the answer is really a question - which god? Which one should I believe just in case?
Search for Pascal's Wager to get even more answers to this question.
