Who would you suggest. The ones who work the cheepest? Pakistanis? The fiersest warriors? Zulus? Mexicans -readily available? It would seem to me that the rest of the world would look at the US as bunch of obese slackers who won't even get off their arsses to protect themselves. We should be ashamed to even consider the possibility. Its very different if someone comes to America legally and wants to join the armed forces and is thus granted citizanship after serving this countey. Outsoursing our military seems just a bit sleezy and risky. The Romans got so lazy that during the late empire when they were too fat to fight they recruiteed foreign soldiers to do their warring and the country completely collapsed. The Roman Empire lasted 1000 years however. We may nort make it that long!

Me and many of my friends served during Viet Nam and know the costs of war.

Actively recruiting foreigners is different than having non citizens choosing to join the us armed forces. Will we actively recruit Iraqis?

WASHINGTON -- The armed forces, already struggling to meet recruiting goals, are considering expanding the number of noncitizens in the ranks -- including disputed proposals to open recruiting stations overseas and putting more immigrants on a faster track to US citizenship if they volunteer -- according to Pentagon officials.

Well, despite your wording I think it is a good and important question.

Yes, I assume that you mean foreign born who are not just those already cleared by immigration. They can join.

Yes, when I was in Vietnam we had Mexican nationals, Canadians, a few guys from such as Yugosalvia, etc.

One Mexican born Marine recieved the Medal Of Honor posthumously! Jiminez as I recall, it gets worse the INS later deported his mother, no bs! Well quick action by an Arizona Senator soon took care of that screw up. (1969 7th marines)

Yes, I recall reading the last Roman legions were such as from Brittan who went to the relief of a falling Rome.

I would set the requirements high, security checks, etc.

Trust me they would fill many of the "high tech" jobs, and such.

It has many benefits for the concept of becoming "American",
I would rather see a kid from Mexico or Central America or Eastern Europe get into this country than many of those "legal" white collar, high tech immigrants.

Just one veterans view...

This isn't news. The military has always allowed non-citizens to join. The minimum requirement is they have a valid Work Authoriztion Card from INS. Yes their citizenship is fast tracked, instead of ten years to become a citizen it's cut down to 1 or 2 years with honorable service. Also the fees are no longer required for non-citizen application for citizenship.

The US Military have always recruited foreigners that have legal residency in the United States; but they are usually limited to certain occupations due to security reasons and their inability to obtain a security clearance. There are also many Military Occupation Specialties where foreigners knowledge or foreign expertise is a tremendous asset to US Military Operations. As we all know; many of our fallen troops were foreigners that were given their US Naturalization posthumously. I have had the priveledge to serve in the Military with many foreigners that considered it a great honor to be able to give back to the country that have given them so much, and in a few cases that meant their lives.

This is not an unusual practice in other countries. Serve the country for four years, you get citizenship. I don't see what's sleazy about being willing to fight for a nation so you can return a citizen with freedom.
