A little moist food would be OK at this point-just don't let them fill up on it right at first. Start with small amounts to get the accustomed to it.

I agree that wet food is not the best idea. Dry food is ideal for oral health, so it's better to not get the dogs "used" to canned food.

A really good way to wean puppies is to crush a high-quality dry puppy food and mix it with warm puppy formula until it's moist and soft. In a couple of weeks, your little pugs will be ready for plain ol' dry puppy food! Be sure to offer plenty of water when that time comes.

You can begin supplementing them with food any time after 3 weeks of age.

I would, however, counsel against using wet food -- most of the time it just leads to diarrhea in puppies, it doesn't do their emerging teeth any good, and if it's canned junk food (i.e. "Mighty Dog", or any other grocery store food) then it will probably do them more harm than good.

Instead:

Get a high-quality puppy food (i.e. Eukanuba, Purina Pro Plan, Nutro Natural Choice, or the like) and soak it in warm water untl it's soft.

OR

Use a mixture of Gerber rice formula (human baby food) and boiled hamburger. Again, use water in the mixture -- not cow's milk.

At this point, I took puppy chow, smashed it with a hammer in a baggy to about the size of cornmeal, and poured boiling water on it. I stirred it several times as it cooled to nice and warm, and fed to my min-pin pups. The result was about the texture of oatmeal. The mom was just getting sucked dry (5 pups for a tiny mom) and the pups were still seeming hungry. Gradually I let the size of the chunks get bigger, used less water and now they eat their food dry.

Do you have a book on raising newborn puppies? It will tell you when they are ready to wean. However, at almost a month old I think you could start introducing very small amounts of "puppy" food. Call your vet to ask which ones they prefer. Years ago we used baby pablum but I'm sure they have better stuff now. The mother dog will start to wean them herself as they start eating more on their own.

Yep, absolutely. But make sure that you use a GOOD food like Eukanuba to get the nutrition that they need. DO NOT feed them cheap food b/c they will eat lots of it and get nothing for their efforts. You are going to spend the money on the food one way or the other - either by buying 50 pounds of cheap dogfood or 5 bpounds of good dogfood. It's up to you, but I'm not THAT big a fan of cleaning up poop to feed cheap dogfood. :D

4 weeks is a good time to start supplementing them with puppy food soaked in a bit of water. MAke sure it is moist enough for them to eat it, especially with their baby teeth.

Also be sure not to overfeed, some dogs don't know their limits.

I would start weaning them. Put some can food or dry puppy food mix with water to soften it up. If they eat it their ready.
