Be it a lawyer or physician, you need to find one within the specialty field you require. You should be able to research bankruptcy lawyers in your area by going to your telephone directory (or the internet). You would think that if you are considering filing bankruptcy, you obviously have no money, but bankruptcy is not free...or even discounted. There are different types of bankruptcy and each carries a different price tag. Each state has their own specific rates/rules for bankruptcy. You need to consult 2 or 3 bankruptcy attorneys. There are new bankrputcy laws and you may or may not qualify...and you may have to take classes in money management before you will be able to file. Check this out thoroughly. Good Luck.

Try Lawguru.com or LegalMatch.com. You can also try the local county bar association to see if they have an attorney referal service. Most attorneys at least offer a free consultation. Many people stop making the payments on their credit cards in order to save the money for legal fees.

I would check into the reputation and experience of the lawyer. You need a lawyer who knows and understands the bk laws and rules. You should be able to find one who will take payments if necessary as long as you pay the fee before they file the petition.
Dealing with a lawyer who does not know what he is doing is a nightmare.

You may want to check with your local bar association or referral service - depending on your income and the circumstances behind filing, there are firms & attorneys that provide free or reduced-fee representation. Check the link below to find sources in Boston.

If you expect to receive a tax refund this year, you may also consider using it to retain a lawyer.

Good luck :-)

Why are you filing bankruptcy?

Try to fulfill your legal and moral obligations to your lenders. Contact them and set up a repayment schedule. Do a budget and include as much a possible in repayments.
