i live in what is considered the "hood", so i can't just go running or skipping down my block. however, I do have a jumprope and i can do that in my small, gated backyard. will jumproping work? I need to shed a lot of pounds. how many times should I jump the rope in a single session? Or how long?

Jump roping is great aerobic exercise - it'll really get your heart pumping. This will be fantastic for your overall health and fitness. You will generally get fitter, and will probably lose weight, but for best overall weight loss remember to watch what you eat too. The winning formula is your input has to be less than your output! (In other words, you have to eat slightly less calories than you burn.) Just keep it in moderation, eat right, and it'll work over time.

It won't happen overnight, but if you keep it up, like 4-5 times a week, 1/2 hour a day minimum, then you'll start to see results in probably 6 weeks??? Depends on your body type, your metabolism, and what you eat/drink.

Good luck, and 'good on you' for showing initiative.

Jumping rope is an excellent aerobic exercise that doesn't require drugs, herbs or other questionable things. In fact, Disney is producing a movie about jumping rope for TV soon.

The great thing about jumping rope is you can do it alone or with any number of friends. Just when you think you've mastered it, you can add a second rope or routine and be challenged all over again. It's also considered low impact because your knees and ankles are bent and is economical and a lot of fun as well. You can jump rope to music or without and can do it anywhere you can bring a rope with you.

Jumproping is an excellent method of cardio exercise providing you maintain a a heart rate of 60 to 80% of your peak rate level for 30 minutes or longer.

It is also a great method for toning many body parts such as triceps, forearms, deltoids, calves and more.

It is a great way to burn calories, but it's considered "high impact," meaning there is some stress on bones and joints. If you have knee or ankle problems, you might want to consider a gentler form of exercise (walking, swimming).

You should jump as long as you can, and try and build up the time you are doing it. (This is true for any exercise.) Good luck!

yes, because you are working both your legs and your arms, and it is a wonderful cardiovascular exercise. Try a few minutes, and then slowly you will get better at jumping for a longer amount of time. try maybe 300 jumps nonstop, then after about 1-2 days, try 350 nonstop, etc.
