It's generally a breach of bylaw to use the same meter twice in a row by adding more money after the time expires. It's typically a city bylaw, so I can't speak for all municipalities.
It doesn't matter who puts the money in the meter, the car is supposed to move once the meter expires once.
You aren't actually breaking the law by adding coins. It's the owner of the car who is technically breaching the law by not moving her/his car.
I say keep doing it. Spread the kindness and hope the driver doesn't get the ticket. It doesn't hurt anybody.

I did it once, and I got a $20 ticket! Well, actually, it wasn't really illegal to put the quarter in the other meter. I just got the ticket because I forgot to put one in my own meter!

Yes. Once, the cops cited a guy dressed in a clown suit for walking down the street and feeding all the meters.

I don't know about everywhere, but some places it is. You are supposedly depriving the city of its fines.
Of course, if you only did it to one meter they would have no way of knowing if it was yours. It's the people who go down the street feeding every single meter that they get annoyed with.

It violates the city ordinance about re-feeding meters, that's all. If you don't get caught, play on.

nope i got stopped once and they wouldnt let me. also jackasss did an episode where there was a meter fairy giving everyone time. a cop stopped him and told him it was illegal

If you get caught, yes. Most cops won't care but if you run into one of THOSE ones, you can get fined or just a warning.
