Is it required to finish my first lesson in driver's training in order for my permit to be valid?

I'm not sure. I live in California, and I've asked all my friends and they told me to take the lessons first, but my parents are urging me to just go out there and drive. What should I do?

Take the lessons. Parents are not experts on everything.
