My Son is off to America on the 27th Dec for new year.
Unfortunatly our family have been ill over the holiday with a sickness/runs bug.

If my Son feels unwell and needs to see a Doctor whats the cost for a consultation and maybe a prescription.

*** MY SON DOES HAVE TRAVEL INSURANCE TO TAKE BUT I PRESUME YOU PAY AND CLAIM ON RETURN UNLESS THERE'S COMPLICATIONS.

Yep, you will probably have to pay something when you see a doctor in the U.S. It's really a tragedy that we don't have national health insurance the way you folks do in the U.K. and Canada.

If it's an emergency, you would present your son to the local E.R., and it'll cost you an arm and a leg to be seen. If it's not an emergency, you can find local physicians through any local medical society (call an operator, ask a hotel clerk, or people you know here).

Your travel insurance may mean that your bill is sent to your own country's national health service for payment? I'm not sure how travel insurance works, but it seems like your country's health program might even cover overseas care if it is necessary. Good luck!

Health care is a human right, and should not be a privilege of the rich!

Every place is different. Maybe the other people you have been hearing about have paid privately. I had exactly the same as what you have had with my two pregnancies. I went for my scans around 13 weeks and if there are any problems with your baby then a medical abortion can still be done if that is what you want, after all the baby is still tiny at 12 weeks. The later the scan the more you will see of the baby. You have blood tests later in the pregnancy and you only really get urine tests done if you are having problems in that area. This is obviously your first baby so I can understand you are over anxious but I would really urge you both to relax, especially your wife and enjoy this time. Believe me the 9 months fly by and you will soon be wondering what you were worried about and wishing you enjoyed it more.

Providing your son has not shown symptons before he sets off he will be covered by his insurance, although he will have to pay for initial consultation. From experience its about $50.00. He willalso have to pay any drugs, the cost will depend on what drugs are prescribed. You usually have to show a Credit Card first so the advice would be to have one put by for just such an emergency. Yes you are right you would have to claim on return unless the insurance company has agreed otherwise direct with the Doctor/hospital in the US. My wife had to find about $400.00 when she broke her toe while in the states but she was upgraded to First Class for the return trip by the insurance company, which she did not have to fund. The $400.00 was repaid on return fairly swiftly. KEEP RECEIPTS.
