Fighting among nations is similar to fighting between individuals. Each fight or war is for a different purpose.
Often the reason is greed. greed for power. Dictators from small countries try to grab up more and more, making them dictators of larger and more important nations.
Hitler is a good example. He made no secret of his desire to rule the whole world. War could have been averted by giving him all that he demanded. But if you're not willing to fight for your home, you soon won't have it.
America could have averted the Civil War by letting the Southern States break away, splitting the US into two countries. Had that happened, world history would have been much different.
Islamic terrorists trained and financed by Iraq bomber America killing thousands, and causing billions of dollars worth of damage. We had a choice of letting them continue until nothing was left of our country or to war against them.
So terrible as war is, it is sometimes better than giving in without a fight.

There is no money in it. When looking back on dictators, leaders both non-communist and communist observe how many of them started wars who ended up hiding out, fleeing to other nations or took refuge in a rat hole of a pit like Saddam did himself. They were and are all powerful as long as the little guy is fighting there wars. Until that changes, the trouble maker fighting his own conflicts there will unfortunately always be wars.

Man most people's answers are basic and ignorant, speakeasy's especially.
War profits banking institutions. Many of them see war as a long term way to make money (lending to both sides) which is silly, I know, but they get away with it anyways. You see wars in the news that don't seem to have reason. . . people who are sponsored just make up reasons to fight wars..politicians...etc.
Basically, you can not just stop wars because you can not just stop paying your taxes. As long as you pay 'em, you support a war. I encourage just taking a positive outlook on life and not condoning violence.
btw if what speakeasy is saying is the case, we would be in Dafur, a place that has real issues, not Iraq.

No way, we have always had war and always will. I can not think of a time when a war wasn't going on some place in the world, even back in Bible times. As long as man is on the earth, we will always have fighting, no one but no one is ever going to see eye to eye .

As a survival trait, humans conflict against whatever threatens them. That has made them the world's greatest survivor and has removed them from the lion's dinner menu.
If we lose that trait, we end up back on the lion's dinner menu.
Furthermore, it is war that eliminates tyranny, allowing people to live in relative peace and freedom until the next would-be tyrant comes along to oppress them. It is not possible to peacefully ask a tyrant to stop being a tyrant.
Even Gandhi stated that when one is responsible for the safety of others, violence is preferable to cowardice.

It's decidedly naive to think that any war is fought for arcane concepts such as "liberation" and "freedom". It is true that in certain cases those ends were achieved, however any careful study of history would suggest that they were side-effects rather than causes for or even the general aims of any war.
Wars are fought for essentially economic reasons. Either for direct control of land and resources, or for the more abstract reasons of "power-projection" (which is a cozy term for asserting psychological dominance). Since the nature of capitalism is competitive, and the economic resources needed to drive it are limited, it seems to me that war will continue to be inevitable.

That would be great!
But there are things worse than war. I think just about everyone here is glad that the American Civil War was fought (to end slavery) and WWII was fought (to end fascism), once they were started. And each of those conflicts was exceptionally bloody.

The real reason is that human being seem to possessed by the demon, GREED. Someone else has something, and we want it. The reason for wars, although it sounds good, are not patriotism and "national security" as the politicos want us to believe.Wealth and power.

Every living creature in nature competes and struggles to obtain and control necessary resources. Us humans have perfected the art of that struggle by inventing formidable weapons.

Survival of the Fittest. If something is determined to be that important, and two sides or more want it, and they won't share, they will fight over it. Every animal does this, humans just take it to another level.
