I want to cook taco salad tonight for dinner but I want to make fried taco bowls instead of baked. How can I do that? I don't have one of those deep fryer gizmos just a regular pot and hot grease. I know this way is not healthy for you but I prefer fried and then put in the oven. Thanks for any and all help.

As long as the pan is deep enough to hold enough oil to cover the tortilla it should work fine. You need to rig a fry basket with a second smaller basket that fits inside to make a bowl or you could begin them in the oven to get the shape and finish them in the fryer. Good Luck!

You can form them over a bowl of the right size, turned upside down; you drap them over the bowl's bottom and let them dry or harden. Then deep fry as you were going to, using the deep pot and grease. Make sure the pot can handle the very high heat you need, though. It should be good quality, heavy guage or thickness metal, with a sturdy bottom with sturdy riveted handle/s.

Try googling these sites for more info on how to do this:

I have also seen them pre made at the store and once, my girlfriend asked her local, run of the mill Giant Eagle grocery store to make these plus some bread bowls the day of a party and they did--they really didn't cost much, either.

Get a big pot with a ton of oil. Heat it up to 375 or so. Place a flour tortilla on the oil and immediately take a heat-safe ladle and push it down in the center. Wait for about 30 seconds to a minute, remove with tongs, and put upside down on paper towels to drain.

They're really easy. And trust me, I've made many over the years at work.

We have a special mold at work and bake them upside down like the first poster who mentioned the foil balls. You could also use an oven-safe glass bowl. If you want to fry them, a ladle works great to plunge the tortilla into the hot oil. But you need a lot of oil to submerge it. I'd go with the baking trick for home use.

After heating up the tortillas - or lightly frying them, while they're still soft, lay each one over a small (glass) bowl until cool enough to handle. They should hold their shape.

"Taco Shells"

1/4 cup salad oil
10 (6") tortillas

In 6" skillet over medium-high heat, in hot oil, cook 1 tortilla about 15 seconds until limp.

I would imagine the only way to accomplish this is to bake the shell first until it will hold it's "bowl" shape. (Assuming you are starting with a flat, soft tortilla)Then place it in a pot with hot grease. Fry it a little and then turn it over to get the other half.

To get the soft tortilla to bake into a bowl shape just lay it over something that is oven safe and let the sides fall into that scalloped shape and then bake it. Good luck.

I'd heat the grease then use tongs and a potato masher. Hold the edges up with tongs and then use the potato masher to flatten the body of the bowl. Once that's done, you can turn it around it's sides to fry the edges. Might take a few tries to get the hang of it, but it does work.
