I've stripped off the border, scraped off every trace of the paper, and scrubbed at the glue for ages, but there's still a lot of it on the wall. I've tried a blade, a brush, a potscrub and plenty of soap and water, and white spririts, all to no avail.

Is there a magic formula I'm unaware of?

no magic formula - but I use straight white vinegar. do a little bit at a time, then scrape with a straight edge razor. after you remove all the adhesive, go back over the whole area with vinegar again. there should not be a sticky feeling to the wall when all adhesive is removed. you can then wipe the walls with plain water. again, do not soak the walls - you will end up with a big mess.

white spirits, lighter fluid, etc are all a fire hazard and i would highly recommend you DO NOT use these.

There are a few things you can use:

1. Hot soapy water, a sponge and a razor blade.
2. Blue windshield washer fluid.
3. Goof off (buy it at your local hardware store.
4. Lighter fluid
5. There's a product you can buy especially to remove wallpaper glue but it's expensive and I can't remember the name.

My best bet is what I always use. Blue windshield washer fluid.

Enjoy! And good for you! Borders are soooo not in style anymore....

I just done paint my bedroom recently which originally have ugly border so it's gotta go.
With a buck left I went to dollar store got some of the fabric softener and I mix it with water equally and spray it on top of those damn border, be generous, when you see the paper getting soft just peel it and it came on right off.

Now you need to rip the border's surface because sometimes it contain some form of plastic so the mix can absorbs easilly.

Good luck and let me know the result.

A bucket of water with vinegar in it - apply it with a sponge and your paste will come off easily with a scraper
