I went to Uxmal and Chichen Itza on the same day. Unless you are a historian I would say it's a bit much to cover. Anyway, a couple of hours will do for the casual tourist as it does get a bit repetitive.

Most of the archaeological sites in Mexico have information boards in English so you don't really need a guide. I do suggest though that you read up a bit about the place before heading out there, on the internet for example.

I've been a long time ago. For me, the experience wasn't too hot since it was raining pretty horribly all day. The tour bus that we were riding in to Chichen Itza was leaky and that's never fun. The place itself is beautiful and you'll learn a lot, but choose the time you go right. It was rainy and than it got really hot for me. Summer may not be the best time.

Well i'm only 12 but i went last summer in August and it was DEADLY hot!!!! So a tip..don't go in August. also, tour guides say it only takes 2 hours to drive there but it really will end up taking 2 1/2-3 hours tops, so be prepared for a long day. Other than that it's amazing....and if you go during summer solstice you may have a chance of seeing special pictures that the Myans timed to be shown during the summer and winter solstices! It's really cool!

No but I heard is really nice and cheap. I have a couple of friends from Peru and they were recently there. You fly to the capital, drive to the mountain, take a train (an old train) and then do A LOT of climbing. You should spend a few days there before going up the mountain to give your body a chance to get acclimatized. Peru, like most Latin American countries gives a good return to the American dollar.
