how come when i go to a drive-thru there are signs that say "walk up orders will be refused" (...or something like that).
now i understand "it's a DRIVE-thru"...but...so what?
my daughter asked me this the other day, and aside from "because it's a drive-thru", i really had no reasonable answer for her.

drakkenfyre...although the other reasons are quite logical, i appreciate your more precise answer! i did think of askng the person at the drive-thru myself, at the time, but i thought it would be more fun to ask Y/A. :)

Unlike the rest of the people answering this question, I actually asked some people working at a local drive thru. The night manager said the policy was enacted due to a string of robberies in the States where someone walked up to the drive thru window with a gun.
The people who worked at the drive thru thought it was silly, especially since drive thrus have much better hours than the restaurant itself, and because they lived in Canada, where there really aren't that many armed robberies.

It has to do with insurance and liability if you were to get hurt. I work at a credit union and asked just that question of our manager. I was told that the risk of injury is high for people walking in a drive-thru, so we were unable to serve them. However, I was told that we do have to serve anyone on wheels, whether it be car, motorcyle, bike, or skate wheels! We even had a woman come through once in an electric wheel chair!

I think because most of these places have indoor areas to order, they think that if you are walking you should use the inside. It also could be a liability for them if someone was hit by a car on their property. Refusing walk up orders and having a sign listing as such is probably a way of covering themselves against a lawsuit.

Liability.
If they allow pedestrians to walk around in areas where people are driving up and getting food, it's an accident waiting to happen. Drivers aren't expecting to see pedestrians in a drive up area, and they're distracted, focused on their money and their food. Add this to the fact that some people don't like to take their own risks in hand, they're quick to sue whenever something goes wrong. So, to reduce liability, drive thru service places don't generally allow people to walk up for service.

Insurance reasons... it is too easy for someone to get hurt by a vehicle if they are just standing in the drive through. Plus the simple fact that they are "drive thrus" and NOT walk thrus... you can just walk inside for that.

They do this for pedestrian and bicycle safety. Besides with the way people drive I would be more likely to get a body cast than a quarter pounder with cheese if I attempted to walk up to a drive thru window.

It's a safety issue. First, a car could zip up to the window, and a person could be standing there waitinf rot heir chicken nuggets and milk shake and get hit. Additionally, a person could walk up and if the window were opened for them, they could easily shove a gun through the window and demand all the money. Of course, that could be done in a car, but it would be less personal and harder to pull off.

probably because people might realise it is quicker to walk up to the drive through counter than go inside and you would get a line of people waiting and it would be dangerous and hold up the cars
