My 6 year old Golden Retriever has a very gentle nature around other dogs except when food is involved. She will play fine with any dog, but let food enter the picture and she becomes very miserable and aggresive. How can I break this habit ? It makes it very uncomfortable when I have to watch her every minute when out visiting in case someone brings out a treat. Any hints would be just great!!

Your dog may well be past the age to change her food aggression. Is there no way to assure no other dogs are around during eating and "treat" time?

If your interested in going the no grains route perhaps you might try Natura's Evo, Merrick's Before Grain or Nature's Variety Instinct. I use a rotation of these three foods for my two chihuahuas and both have excellent coats, skin and vitality. The ingredients of these foods are excellent and my dogs find them very palatable. Good luck in your search for food, it can be a real pain but it's worth it in the end.

I had a golden all my life, and as the saying goes you can't teach an old dog new tricks, my golden was fine with people we could take his food away and he would be fine, but was territorial over his food when it came to other animals, its his nature and don't think you can break it.

Get a pinch collar and USE it make her behave while other dogs get treats. Of course give her a treat to reinforce good behavior, she will associate the treat with patience. A friend of mine works with dogs in the Army, and assures me they are never to old to learn good behavior.

I think it's the breed. Goldens are smart but it's hard to challenge instinct.
