I'm planning a wedding and I asked about bridesmaids and she said what was the purpose of having them? Do you really need bridesmaids for a wedding?

It is your day... do it any way that makes you happy and don't listen to all those loudmouths telling you what you have to do (including me).

You don't need bridesmaids. You really should have your best friend stand with you as witness and to help you on the wedding day.

Many women still have bridesmaids because it's the "proper" thing to do or it's expected that all the sisters and girl cousins get to be part of the wedding.

I was the Maid of Honour in a wedding and the only one standing up at the front with the bride. She didn't have any bridesmaids so, the answer for your bride is, it is completely optional. The purpose of them is to help out with planning, getting ready the day off and, if the bride has anyone she wants to include but not necessarily as the Maid of Honour, this is one of the better ways to include them.

In the end, it's totally up to her.

No...bridesmaids are not a necessity, but they can help get some things accomplished (if you have the right ones). The only thing required for a wedding is the bride, groom, minister, rings & marriage license and 1 or 2 witnesses. Everything else is just extra.

No, only a maid of honor to be your official witness. A long time ago, bridesmaids served as decoys. The bride and the bridesmaids were all dressed alike. The idea behind this is that baddies planning to kidnap the bride might grab the wrong one.

Well, their purpose is mostly as a support system during the planning but in most cases, they are more work then support, lol. The only thing you are required to have in a wedding are two witnesses who don't have to be wedding party members - they just have to be present when you exchange vows and sign the papers. My brother had his mom and his bride's mom as their witnesses.

No, not really. Bridesmaids have become more of a tradition and don't serve much of a purpose anymore. It's perfectly acceptable not to have attendants.

No just a maid of honor. The bridesmaids are your best female friends or sisters. It goes back to the times when the friends of the bride and groom stood up to confuse evil spirits and/or those who would oppose the marriage.

You do NOT NEED bridesmaids at your wedding if you do not want them. You can have as many as 100 (hah) or as few as zero. Its your wedding.

You don't HAVE to have bridesmaids. It's just a way of honoring those close to you and getting help with all the plans and such.

No. I'm not having any, and it has taken a load off of my mind. I can't tell you the number of wedding's I've been in...and the number of once used $200+ dresses I have that I'll never wear again.
