We've had him for a week now and he's afraid of everything: he doesn't come when we call him (seems to think we're tricking him?), he is afraid of his leash, afraid of new people and dogs, afraid of loud noises.

Is this just because it's a new environment?

A couple days ago he was eager to explore the house, but now he seems to think of the couch as his "safe zone" and won't leave without us coaxing him.

What would cause this behavior regression?

We got him from a breeder on the Internet. I did some research on how to spot a good breeder and I thought she met the criteria. Now I don't know, since he seems so skittish. He's a Pomeranian, but I don't think that should make a difference.

He does enjoy treats but when I hold them out to him and call him, he seems like he thinks I'm going to trick him.

I don't see him as really having a regression in his behavior...When you first got him home, he was exploring his new surroundings - Now, if anything, he's probably digressing into a behavior he had before you got him.

What is the history on the dog? Where did you get him? Was he abused before you got him? Need a little more info...

After seeing your further info....

I think the problem is that he's probably not used to being a "House Dog". If it's a proper breeder, the dogs are probably not kept in the house, but in a large kennel environment (separate dog runs with common play yards). It'll take him a little while to adjust to being in the house and being a "pet".

Give him lots of love and create a "safe" environment for him and be patient.

A crate is probably something he is used to, so if you don't have a crate, get one. Leave the door open so he can go in when he wants.
