Original question: My 8 yr old wants to donate some of his toys "to someone who lost his home and toys in the hurricane" (his words). I think this is noble and would like to honor his request. Does anyone know an organization or someone personally that needs a few toys suitable for an 8 yr old boy? Feel free to e-mail too.

Updating question: We'd really like to donate the toys to hurricaine survivors, not other places and as we live in the boon-docks there aren't any shelters or salvation army stores, etc. He's been really touched by those stories and I want to feed this desire in him to help.

We don't have anyplace to donate around here that qualifies.
Just need info on hurricaine victims please.

And the places that "pick up" only come about 20 miles from their place of business. Not as far as we are.

My four boys did this last year. But it was much more complicated than contacting the Red Cross. The Red Cross would have taken our donations but then those donations would have been distributed to children in our area. So to get them where we wanted them to go, I googled Hurricane Katrina, and then did some research about the towns that were hit the hardest. After that I took those town and looked up in their yellow pages the names of the local churches in that area. Then, at least I had contact information. Once I did that, they put me in touch with actual families I could help. I'm glad we did. Granted, I had to pay for the shipping, but it was the right thing to do and my kids learned something from all of this. Now when they get the newest hand-held game or toy, the first question out of their mouth, is "who can we give our old stuff to this time?"

Even if you're not a church-goer, your local place of worship may still be collecting goods and funds for the victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Much as I personally despise organized religions, they do tend to have a great PR and distribution system, and the faith-based organizations were the most effective at getting help to the stricken areas and people.

If not, you might try sending these toys to either the Red Cross or the Salvation Army Katrina relief funds by mail.

Either way, though, I want to congratulate you and your partner for raising a son who is so aware and compassionate, even at this tender of an age.
