Why is it bad to skip meals?

Skipping meals can be bad for different reasons depending on the person, say, if they need lots of sleep and only need 2 meals a day because of the way their body works or it can offset important ratios maintained in your body such as salt and your normal carbs, fats and proteins.

For your normal person they need 3 meals a day to keep their bodies in check. Nutrients like your normal carbs, fats and proteins are of course essential to your health along with salt, potassium, iron, zinc, and all the other trace things you find in foods. But if you skip a meal your body will be lacking these nutrients. If you don't have carbs your body doesn't have an immediate energy source and must resort to breaking down fat. If you don't have fats you don't have as much stored energy so you become weaker and weaker and your body will also shut down as your body's cells are made out of a double layer of phospholipids (a fancy scientist way of saying fat, I'm only in honors biology) and if you don't have proteins your body can't repair cells and transport nutrients throughout your body.

The other trace things that can be found in some foods and a good mulitvitamin are also important because they regulate your chemical reactions in your body. Your body also needs a certain amount of salt in the blood stream as your cells survive best in a mixture of 95% water and 5% salt. Increase or decrease either one of those and your red blood cells start to die off quicker.

Skipping meals causes blood sugar to drop and it should remain steady during the day. The body needs carbohydrates and protein throughout the day. Your body is a machine. It is like putting gasoline into the car. I like to fill up when I am one-quarter full. I don't wait till my tank is empty. What if I can't get the car started?

You should not let your energy levels go too low. This also wrecks havoc on your metabolism, because the body believes that you are in a state of famine and so it forces you to binge when necessary but then stores the excess calories, causing you to gain weight and get a lower metabolism.

Also, by not eating, your metabolism goes down and stays there. This is why strict diets do not work. It is better to cut back on fat and sugar, eat normal amounts, stay away from junk food and exercise. Lifestyle adjustments are easier and better, but you must make the commitment.

Blood sugar. I was doing this to lose weight...or at least decrease my caloric intake. The end result was dizzy spells; went to emergency I got so scared to find out that my blood sugar levels were dropping severely. When I would slam a glass of orange juice, I would feel better. Thought I was diabetic - very worried. Actually, eating protein will elevate sugar levels and keep them there longer.

You need food to get energy and keep your metabolism going.

Food is like gas for a car. Without gas in it, the car won't go.

So, going without food will make you weaker, slower, and eventually die.
