Where are you? It makes a difference. In my area, Giant is cheaper that Safeway. Shoppers, Bottom Dollar, etc. claim to be cheaper. But, Wegmans' is 17% cheaper, on average, than any of them.

I haven't heard of Giant, but Safeway is far cheaper than Albertsons. Except for Parmesan and lemons. (A dollar for a lemon??)

For real deals, check out lower end dollar stores and department stores for canned and dry foods. Clip coupons and stay away from 'designer name' grocery stores. Go to the cheaper ones in the cheaper end of town. If you are looking for good meats and fish, go to the grocery stores and not a meat specialty shop where you will pay through the roof. I also recommend if you are willing to spend money on quality cheeses, eggs and yoghurt, check out the health food store.
I buy a lot of stuff from the bulk food store, which carries cheaper versions of items at the health food store. Stay away from exotic grains like quinoa and millet, they are hard to digest. For good deals on rice, wheat germ, oatmeal, drink mix, muffin mix, etc. the bulk food store is better. Dry herbs are as good as fresh ones, except that fresh parsley, dill and cilantro are always better for dishes.
