I'm making kielbasa and sauerkraut in my crockpot. (My first recipe in it, it's new!) Of all the recipes I've looked at and also in the one I'm making, they don't say to precook the kielbasa. It cooks for hours and hours, so I say no. DH says yes.
Do you cook meats before tossing them into a crockpot for 8 hours? Or will the recipes I make this week (whole small chicken, stew meats) require prep cooking? Thanks!

DH is "Dear Husband" and/or "Damn Husband", depending on the mood of the poster hehe...
Thanks for the resounding response. We cooked it for a few minutes to shake a bit of grease and then tossed it in.
I tremendously look forward to putting minimal effort into future recipes.
It is indeed a Kowalski.... Good stuff!

Kielbasa is already cooked. For a little more flavor you can grill it in a frying pan before throwing it in the crockpot, but you do not have to.
The crockpot will cook the other meats like chicken so you do not need to precook those either
Who is "DH"?

You don't need to cook the kielbasa first unless you want to get rid of some of the fat. Kielbasa is loaded with grease. You want to blend the flavors in the crock pot by slow cooking, but you don't want it swimming in grease. If you decide to cook it to remove the fat, prick it with a fork first.
Mmmm... Kielbasa!
I miss the wonderful Kowalski Kielbasa from Hamtramck Michigan in Detroit. There is nothing else like it.
I live in Dallas now and cannot get it.

Not all kielbasa is pre-cooked. The object of a crock-pot is to slow cook foods. Follow the recipe or instructions, but substitute any liquid for beer. Your kielbasa will be very tasty guaranteed.

The crockpot will cook it however, kielbasa is precooked and very greasy so to eliminate a lot of the grease you may wish to parboil it first to reduce the grease.

BBQ Beef Brisket Trimmed beef brisket 1 cup of your favorit bbq sauce 1/2 cup liquid smoke 1 onion chopped 2T. red wine vinegar 2T. brown mustard 2Tsp ground cumin 2tsp chili powder Mix all the above ingredients together, and place in a plastic bag with the brisket, marinate 24 hours, then put beef and sauce into a crock pot. Cook low for 12-15 hours... let the brisket rest about a half hour, slice at an angle and serve with your favorite bbq sauce. Makes great sandwiches.

I don't cook or brown any meat before putting them in the crock pot. It doesn't appear to make any difference to the flavour....just saves on washing up another pot!
I have cooked a whole gammon in my pot with a little honey and water in the bottom and it was delicious.

not neccessary, but I alway pre grill my kielbasa, it gives it a nicer look, and gets rid of some of the extra grease which would otherwise end up in the crock.
