Depends on what kind of perishable food you mean.
Cookies, breads, etc, ok.
Cheese, cheese spreads, ok, but I'd check the packaging to make sure it hasn't been torn, etc, also check expiration dates.
Milk, eggs, luncheon meats, ok, check packaging and expiration dates. Make sure eggs aren't cracked.
Fruits and vegetables, probably ok if it looks ok, again, check packaging and expiration dates.
Fresh meats, I've never seen that at a dollar store but if I did, I wouldn't trust it. These are highly perishable and if the package is slightly damaged it can drip on other things and contaminate them.

A good friend bought some canned crab meat from a dollar store - after opening it, his apartment stunk for a week - vile!

If it's not past its expiration date and the package isn't damaged or open, I don't know why not. If it's a really *weird* brand you haven't heard of, you might want to rethink buying it. Otherwise, I'd say go for it.

Always check expiration dates but if it looks questionable don't buy it, why waste your money on something your not going to use.
