My goal is to run a 5k (possibly even a half marathon) in April. All advice (real advice) would be helpful. Thanks.

Also is there anything I can do indoors when it is cold or bad weather (don't have a treadmill) that will help me prepare for running.

ensure you are healthy first of all, i.e. you dont smoke, arent seriously overweight. Get good running shoes poss spend about £50. When you start take it easy with a mixture of running or walking, select a circular route so you are never far from start of your run. Try running 5 mins slowly then walk a minute, you are the only one who can gauge the ratio, as you will know your own fitness. If possible run with a friend who is at the same fitness level as you. dont be disheartend there will be times when you feel down, dont give up. The only thing you can do indoors is stretching, however look upon the bad weather as an additional challenge, I live in Scotland and cannot depend on 'good' days, running in bad, cold, wet, weather will increase stamina. If you need any further info please e mail me I have ran a number of marathons in sub 3.5 hours and halfs in sub 1.5 hours

Best advice start slowly..meaning start running every other day..dont try to run too fast either you will for sure give out! And keep doing it. Every other day is the best to build your endurance and go at a nice good pace-you can run a little faster at the end run 1/2 mile one week then increase to 1 mile the next and so on.
Also try to either get to a gym or the ymca somewhere with a treadmill-the best way to build your strength and endurance is to continue to run!
You are gonna love it!!
***Invest in some good quality shoes this is so important!
(Asics are really great!)
