According to Janet Berres and others, your first Tarot deck should have been received as a gift. Am I following this notion if I purchased one with a gift certificate someone gave me?

i've seen both sides of this argument.

in your case, it is technically a gift...but there is the argument that you shoudl actually pick your own -- there are many different varieites and formats for tarot (i've always preferred the Rider Tarot) -- however, I've heard it said that you pick it yourself, with your own energy, selecting the one tht you feel is right...and only you charge that tarot deck.

i think your situation is the ideal one -- technically a gift, but one that you select for yourself.

i never thought you should wait for someone to give you one, before having one.

Your own Tarot deck does not have to be received as a gift.

I am a professional psychic and always have at least 4 different decks on the go at any one time. When a deck get’s a bit too well worn I buy a new deck (often from eBay). I prefer to work with as new a deck of cards as possible so the shuffle and deal smoothly and quickly. I usually sell my old decks on eBay too. Here’s a live RSS feed for Tarot Decks on eBay at the moment. http://feeds.feedburner.com//TarotDeck

You can use this four minute video as a brief meditation on the tarot that, repeatedly viewed, will help you learn how to read tarot cards psychically. http://www.psychic-junkie.com/tarotvision.html

Yeah, as long when you send the thank you card you write, "Thank you for the gift certificate; I got a tarot deck!" If the person who gave you the certificate would have never given you the cards or would disapprove, then I would wait until someone else gives you a set or another gift certificate.

Otherwise, you and a friend could each by a deck and exchange them!

No - even though it was purchase with a gift certificate it was not gifted directly to you. The point of them being a gift is to prevent you from choosing the wrong deck - the theory is that if you choose your own deck then your emotions may interfere with a clean reading. You can give them to someone else though. Good Luck!

Though I never really followed the gift idea (though my first deck was indeed a gift)...I'd check into *why* it should be a gift. If it has to do with money, or just the idea of a gift, I'd say it's fine. If it's more about choosing the deck, I'd say no...though I think you're getting the best of both worlds this way. (My gift-deck was one I'd picked out previously and a friend got it for me, so essentially...I think it's the same idea here.)

If you assume your friend knew you would get a deck with the gift certificate then yes, go ahead and get it.

Yes, that qualifies as a gift.

Ooo...that's tricky. You're not really receiving it AS a gift, but as a RESULT OF a gift. I don't think it counts, no.

Sorry!
