Scrub the skin thoroughly with a vegetable brush and pierce the potato several times with a fork. Brush the skin all over with either soft butter or olive oil, and wrap the potato tightly in aluminum foil. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for about an hour. To test for doneness, I usually just grasp the potato (using a pot holder) by the sides and squeeze. If it gives a little bit and you can actually press the sides in, it's done. If your potatoes are really large, they may take an extra 15 - 20 minutes baking time.

Also, if you don't eat the skin, brushing them with butter isn't necessary--that's only for flavor. But you still need to scrub them. :)

If you want a BAKED potato, do NOT use the microwave.

Rub a little cooking oil on the outside, and put it in a hot oven (375-400 degrees). Bake until the potato pierces easily with a fork.

If you want a steamed potato, put foil around it before baking.

scrub clean cold water, don't poke holes in the skin, will not steam the right way
oven...about 375-400 degrees about an hour, longer if larger.
place on the rack to have crunchy skin or can also use olive oil and place in shallow baking container. another idea is to wrap in foil, but the skin is not the same.
a nice touch is, when cooked through, scoop out the 'meat' of the potato leaving a small amount to support the skin, mix with butter, garlic, salt and pepper, and small amount of shredded cheese, stuff potato skin and place back in oven for at least 15 min to warm through. can also put cheese and crumbled bacon on top for added flavor.

sweet potatos or yams can be done the same way but after washing, cut ends off and place in baking container.

Get your potatoe(s). Wash it/them in cool water. Poke holes in the potatoe with a knife. About 20 holes is good. wrap in tin foil and bake for about an hour/hour and one-half. If you take the potatoe out and wonder if its done you can tell by putting on an over mit or just by useing your pot holder. Squeeze the potatoe and if it gives easily, then its done. If it still feels hard as a rock then put it back in the another 1/2 hour. Theres no exact science to this. Its pretty easy and tastes ALOT better then a microwaved potatoe.

Clean potato then poke holes in potato with a fork. Use a piece of aluminum foil and wrap it up like a tootsie roll. Place in oven on 350 degrees for about an hour. You can test it to see if it is ready by seeing if the fork goes in easily. It takes longer to cook this way but it has a really good taste. Here is a link below similar to my recommendation. Good luck.

I microwave mine. First wash the potato in cold water. Then make sure that the potato is pricked in several places with a fork. (The skin needs to be pierced to prevent the potato exploding in the oven.) A Large potato will need ten minutes cooking time - smaller ones slightly less. That's about all there is to it.

Peel the potato and place directly into oven. Cook at 350 until you can slide a fork easily into the potato. The outside will be slightly crunchy and the inside is soft.
