If it is derogatory, why use it at all?

Would you go to your friend and say, hey there stupid idiot, what's up?

I guess if you want others to stop saying it, then why not stop saying it yourself?

A slur or insult can be kind of a term of endearment if you know the person well and they know you don't mean it. I have two examples:

I call my best friend "Asso" when I first see him. It's an inside joke with a long story attached, but he will repeat it back to me and I don't care. We are both smiling when we say it.

Another friend would tell me "What's up, CRACKER" whenever he came over to visit. It's all about respect, and if I greet them a certain way or they do it to me, it's fine because neither of us are the type to just hurl insults at each other all day.

Stupid idiot is different, I save that one for people that don't know how to drive.

I have noticed that some people feel it is ok to make rude remarks if it is about there culture.
They do not understand that people listening might think that if they can do this to family, others can also. Making slurs an ok thing to do.

I think this issue has a very fine line. We have to be careful who we "joke around" with... especially if we don't know the person too well.

But what you say is true - if we do want others to stop saying it, we have to set the example FIRST and initiate it by not saying it...

i'm white, and that i do no longer think of that is my place to come again to a determination what's incorrect and precise for black human beings or latinos or the different team i'm no longer a factor of. so some distance as cracker is going... that is infrequently offensive and that i do no longer see something incorrect with white human beings utilising it against one yet another. the end result's oftentimes comical.

I make it a point to not use racial slurs regarding any skin color. It only exists to divide us further, when in reality we all need to be working together.

I agree with you, we all need to show respect for all people, these words are derogatory, they are not endearments of any kind.
