Your credit may not be bad if you are continuing to pay off debt. It is bad when you miss payments or overload high interest accounts when the trouble begins. If you own a house try to get a low interest consolidation on your home loan. My advice is to control spending by setting up a schedule of where you are now and where you want to be in 5 years. Sometimes it takes a while to dig out of a bad streak. I have some experience because I had one bad year. I am still paying for it but I am almost back to normal thanks to debt consolidation. I would only use consolidation as a last resort. Bankruptcy is no longer an option unless you are in business for yourself or medically in debt. If you are used to making more money and you are working for less like most Americans these days you have to become a member of the unseen like me. It is a depressing lifestyle where I have days in which I wish I wouldn't even get up at all.

Hi Jackie,

One of the best things you can do is get a copy of your credit report ... you are legally entitled to get a FREE copy of your credit report from all three credit reporting agencies once every year. Go to:

http://www.annualcreditreport.com

Once you get your credit reports on-line or by mail, it'll list all of your outstanding credit as well as the contact information for the creditor. From there you can call them and get additional information or work through their customer service people to make payment arrangements or whatever.

Good luck!
