You don't seem at all clear on the concept of gift giving.
It's not the same as a commercial exchange.
No, you can't expect people to treat your dog like a person. No, you can't shake down your friends for money or presents. No, you shouldn't keep tabs on how many presents you get, or insist people give you presents for non-existent children, or that everything always work out perfectly evenly.
Buy something for the whole family, if you don't want to buy gifts for each person in it.

This is kind of delicate.... I would take into consideration the financial situation of the parents of the kids first......but what has been working for me is that a few of my friends with kids are closer than others. I get gifts for those kids......the parents usually reciprocate (through the kids) with something small in exchange for me. It sounds as if your friends are not doing this. Like you said, the least they can do is get a bone or treat or something for your dog, but remember true giving is to be without expecting anything in return. If you really LIKE the kids and WANT to do it then do it and expect nothing in return. Otherwise, I think you are free to move on, not buy gifts and be free of guilt.

I don't buy my friends gifts for Christmas I just give them a family card. On the rare occasion when I exchange gifts with a friend it is just for the friend or for the family as a whole. I do not buy gifts for my dogs and so do not and would not expect anyone to buy gifts for my dogs or cat.

Well yes you should buy the kids a gift. And yes they should buy your dog a treat..if they feel like your dog is part of your family. Personally, i don't have kids either but enjoyed inviting a young couple i know with two small children over for Christmas. Christmas, after all, is for kids. But dogs are kids too!

never give a gift with the thought of getting a gift back.
do not start giving gifts to friends kids later it might mark trouble or problems
Give to a giving tree where people mostly children ask for clothes or other common items that they lack and are to poor to buy, check the newspapers or your church..Ours has a giving tree that is just for kids in need

um, for sure nobody has to buy your dog a present unless they want to; and you don't have to get presents for your friends' kids unless you are close to their kids. it's really up to you. but when you give, you shouldn't expect something in return. you give for the pleasure of giving. if it's gonna tick you off or make you feel resentful, then don't do it.
one solution is a group present for the whole family.

ask the parents what sort of gift would be appreciated in their home. Some parents find toys such as the Bratz dolls and other toys offensive. Play it safe-you can always go with a nice book or a gift card.

Maybe just buy one small present for each, and don't feel bad if they don't give your dog a present, because it's not only about getting, it's also about giving

I would not buy a dog a gift. It's a waste of money.
