Very similar breeds -- I'd say that the American Bulldog is heavier-bodied and heavier-boned than the Pit Bull. Probably a little larger? I've only ever seen one American Bulldog "in the flesh", and this is the impression I got.
Both very friendly, if bred/raised correctly.
These pages offer a lot of information/pictures on both:

I can't tell you about most but I can tell you about the staffordshire bull terrier and what it should be. If you saw them in the ring in the UK you would think they'd started breeding "teacup" staffies. The best and breed standard dogs are really quite small and some not a lot bigger than a jack russell. Here is the breed standard for a TRUE Staffordshire bull terrier Size Desirable height at withers 36-41 cms (14 to 16 ins), these heights being related to the weights. Weight: dogs: 13-17 kgs (28-38 lbs); bitches 11-15.4 kgs. Even in the UK it's native place most of the staffies you see out on the streets are way oversized and mostly byb bred.

I disagree with the fact that APBTs are taller than American Bulldogs. When most people hear 'bulldog' they think of an English Bulldog, but AB's are much taller and longer. Also, there are two different types of American Bulldogs (something else to keep in mind when searching for an AB). If people are considering bringing either of these breeds into their home I highly recommend doing a lot of research. Both can make awesome pets but they require a certain type of owner (mainly someone who is willing to take the time to properly train them).

One is in the terrier family and one is in the bulldog family?
Its like asking the difference betweeen a Siamese cat and a Persian cat.
They may both have 'bull' in their names, but are very different, from temperment, what they were originally bred for, etc.
Use google to search the breeds and research them if you are looking to get one, or just clear up the question.

well, i think origanally the pit bull came from the bull dog, but a pit bull is big and it's face isn't squished like a bull dog, and pit bullls are A LOT stronger expecially in their chest. and bull dogs are stockyer too.
