we do have a dog and i feel if we buy thier kids a gift the least that they can do is give our dog a bone or somehitng

You don't give gifts expecting a gift in return. You give gifts because you feel you want to... if you don't want to get your friend's brats gifts, don't. If you do want to, go ahead but don't expect a bone for your mutt.

If they aren't good friends then no. If they are close friends then ask them what they would like you to do! A good way is to buy for the kids but not the adults, and by giving kids presents, you've also given to their parents, trust me!

Sure, I will advise you to give gifts to your friends/children. OR
Adopt a child if you can afford, it will keep you happy. You see, Allah Almighty has his own of testing people;(as this worldly life is a test for life hereater), He tests us with money ,poverty , children , no children, orphans etc. all playing their own part. There's no rule ... if you feel moved to give the kids gifts, do it. It won't hurt anyone and you'll probably feel good for having done it!
